Lewis Hamilton managed to save a race in which only a tremendous Rosberg was able to hold him off. The British driver, who started tenth on the grid owing to the problems he had in the qualifying rounds, quickly got past Bottas and Raikkonen, to situate himself behind the eventual race winner and championship leader. Only a problem with the water pressure deprived Hamilton of achieving more: Hamilton's reliability issues continue to dog Mercedes. If it was the power unit during qualifying, at the end of the race he was unable to go at full throttle owing to a problem of his engine overheating.

Hamilton, looking a little unfriendly, said on the podium: “I fought hard. There wasn't a doubt in my mind that I couldn't win it. I had the pace, but then I had the problem with the engine again so I had to back off." Later, in the press conference, the three-times champions spoke more about the problems his Mercedes was having: “The car was running really well, and just when the problem happened I was going a little faster than Nico, but when they told me I had a problem, I had to slow down a bit" Hamilton admitted.
