Iker Casillas has refused to shy away from the ‘favourites’ tag attached to Spain as defending champions at Brazil 2014. “Spain go to the World Cup as outright favourites, which means there is a responsibility on the players' shoulders to put in a great performance and defend our title,” said the captain of La Roja. “We know that this isn’t easy to achieve, because there are teams that are playing really good football and that are contenders for the World Cup alongside Spain, like Germany, Portugal, Argentina, Brazil and Holland.”

According to Casillas, Vicente Del Bosque’s men are ready for the challenge of attempting to be the first side to win two World Cups and two European Championships on the trot, a feat which would also see them become the first European team to claim the trophy in South America. “I would like to go as far as possible with my national team and defend the trophy we won four years ago in South Africa,” he said. “We know that it won’t be easy, but we’re a team that’s all about big challenges and we’re passionate about trying to repeat the success we’ve had.”

Casillas also discussed the evolution of his own role in the Spain squad throughout the course of his career. “When you’ve been playing for the senior national team for 15 years, it means that every time you go to a tournament you’re more prepared than the rest of your team-mates, because of the experience you’ve built up,” the Real Madrid keeper explained. “It means that you can give advice and talk about the experiences you’ve had at previous times.”
