Jair Costa: "We're 100,000 Spaniards in Lagarto"

AS AS 01/06/2014 Fernando Kallás

In Lagarto, Diego Costa is the name on everyone's lips. The city is proud and excited by the news that it's most-loved son will play in this summer's World Cup with Spain.

"We are a little corner of Spain in Brazil, and La Roja has just won 100,000 Brazilian fans from Lagarto", explained the footballer's brother, Jair Costa, after finding out that the Atlético Madrid forward was in the final 23-man squad announced by Del Bosque.

After a few nervous days, Lagarto is in party mood and the colours of both Spain and Atleti are flying throughout Sergipe's second-largest city.

2I spoke with him on Friday night and he told me that the tests were good, but that it was still down to the boss, so we were very nervous, said Jair, who admitted he looked at the squad list on AS.com before calling his little brother, just in case. "They've made a shirt which is half Spain, half Brazil, with the name of Diego Costa on the back", he said.

Since the league-winning forward chose Spain, the people of his city were behind him and backed his decision. "Del Bosque doesn't just recognise Diego Costa's qualities. He went a step further and treated him with love, which is something he didn't get from Brazil. For this we say in Lagarto that Del Bosque is also our coach, who won our hearts", said family friend André Santos.
