Leo Messi and Barcelona are moving ever closer to agreeing the player’s contract renewal up to 2019. Early on this afternoon, the footballer’s father, Jorge Messi, met with club representatives (likely economic vice-president Javier Faus along with other bosses) to talk through a number of matters and reach a final agreement as soon as possible.

The player’s contract finishes on 30 June 2018 and the aim is to extend this by one year at the same time as improving the footballer’s salary. The buy-out clause, of 250 million euros, won’t be touched.

The main point of debate is over the image rights, which are currently held 100% by the player, with the club wanting to receive a part. Barcelona are also proposing small annual salary increases. If the two sides reach an agreement this will be Messi’s seventh contract improvement since he joined the Barcelona first XI.
