Manchester United have confirmed Louis van Gaal as the club’s new manager on a three-year deal.

The Holland boss will take over at the Premier League side after this summer’s World Cup. Ryan Giggs, who took interim charge for United’s last four matches of the Premier League season, will be Van Gaal’s assistant.

United parted company with David Moyes in the final weeks of a 2013/14 season in which the Red Devils endured one of their worst campaigns in recent decades, failing to qualify for European competition.

"To work as a manager for Manchester United, the biggest club in the world, makes me very proud,” former Barcelona coach Van Gaal told United's official website, admitting that he had always wanted to work in England.

The 62-year-old had two spells as coach of the Blaugrana (1997-2000 and 2002-2003), winning La Liga twice (1998 and 1999), the 1998 Copa del Rey and the 1997 UEFA Super Cup.

The Dutchman has also won a Champions League with Ajax in 1995, as well as the 2010 Bundesliga title with Bayern Munich.

"In Louis van Gaal, we have secured the services of one of the outstanding managers in the game today,” said United executive vice-chairman Ed Woodward. “Old Trafford provides him with a fitting stage on which to write new chapters in the Manchester United story.”
