Barcelona have reached the final of the Club World Cup after beating Guangzhou 3-0. It was by no means an easy game for the Azulgranas, who had to overcome the unexpected absence of Leo Messi, owing to an attack of renal colic that sidelined the Argenitnean for this encounter. The scoreline does not reflect the difficulties that Barcelona had to overcome during a first half in which they ran into two tightly lined-up banks of four. Luis Suárez took over the reins and found a way through the Chinese wall to avoid a nasty surprise. Barcelona will now meet River Plate in the final on Sunday, at 11:30 Spanish time (10:30 GMT).

The game began amid talk of Messi's late withdrawal owing to illness. Luis Enrique replaced him with Sergi Roberto in midfield and Iniesta playing further forward than is habitual. From the outset, it was clear that it was not going to be a comfortable game. Scolari, the manager of the Chinese side, set his team up to park the bus, aiming to crowd out Barcelona and limit their passing game. Barça got tangled up in this defensive web until Luis Suárez was able to pounce on a loose ball when the goalkeeper parried a shot from outside the area straight to the feet of the striker.

Así se llegó al descanso With that scoreline, half time came. Having breached the wall, Guangzhou were obliged to push forward and, inevitably, leave spaces at the back. Within very little time Suárez was able to take advantage of a measured pass from Iniesta in the 49th minute and notch up the the second, which basically spelled game over. In the remaining time, the Uruguayan was able to complete his hat-trick from the penalty spot after Munir had taken a dive in the opposing area.
