Real Madrid came up against the perfect rivals in the final game of the Champions League Group Stage. The Blancos had another morale-boosting encounter against opponents who seemed to want to do nothing more than to collaborate in their own demise and let their hosts enjoy a goal-fest. Madrid played well, despite the obvious difference in potential. They played with pace, enthusiasm, good judgement, and goals. Lots of goals.

Benzema took charge of clinching the game before the half-hour. He had already managed a brace against a soft defence, who really belong in another level of competition. The French striker is enjoying a particularly profitable spell of form while off-field problems threaten to push him off to some faraway desert. He is refusing to let the outside pressure get to him and is responding with sackfuls of goals.

The Malmö players looked more like a pub team on a stag party weekend in Madrid. They failed to stick the boot in where it counted and gave Madrid acres of space in midfield. Even the goalkeeper joined in the party when Cristiano Ronaldo took a direct free kick and actually scored. Headline! Cristiano Ronaldo found his opponents' net in a dead-ball situation after almost 200 days of treating opponents, goalkeepers and fans in the stands like the collateral victims of a firing squad with his wayward shooting.

By half time, the game was more than done and dusted with the 3-0 scoreline. Then came the steamrolling. Far from taking their foot off the pedal as they have done so many times recently, Madrid attacked their opponents mercilessly. Cristiano Ronaldo's recital started with three goals in quick succession before later taking his tally to four. In the midst of so much partying, Kovacic and Benzema added another strike each, meaning the Frenchman made it another hat-trick and Madrid achieved a historic goal-fest.
