Real Madrid 10 - 2 Rayo Vallecano

The game against Rayo will leave a bad taste in Real Madrid's mouth. They earned the three points before the break but their image was tarnished in a way that may have unforeseeable consequences. The two goals the visitors scored within the first ten minutes, to cancel out Danilo's early opener, came amid the worrying apathy of the hosts. Rayo at that point still had eleven players on the pitch, but the way the game was unfolding rubbed salt into a wound that is showing no signs of healing.

Madrid's behaviour when faced with opponents who limited themselves to applying pressure all over the field, was incomprehensible. But that was not what annoyed those in the stands, rather it was their sloth when it came to recuperating the ball. There were moments in which Rayo threaded together moves of more than ten passes without so much as a challenge.

And Madrid's fan will not have that. They are fed up with their team's way of playing. Also fed up of their president, because they revived the classic "Florentino, resign" chant even before the team went behind. The current project has no chemistry. And there is even less between the team and the fans. In the midst of the storm, Cristiano Ronaldo tried to intecede before the fans, not with much success.

The opening ten minutes brought on the rage of the fans, but then Rayo lent Madrid a helping hand with the direct red card that the full-back Tito earned. Against ten, Madrid were able to level the contest but when their opponents went down to nine men, after a second yellow for Baena and a rather soft penalty, they were able to take the lead again despite the fury in the stands.

The game finished there. And there was still an hour to play. With the match now totally devalued, Gareth Bale nabbed four, Benzema a hat-trick, Arbeloa got applauded, Cristiano Ronaldo scored more to promote his brand and even Rayo earned some applause when they troubled Keylor Navas. That was a gesture from the fans that possibly hurt.
