Leo Messi, with the two goals he scored at El Molinón in Barcelona's 3-1 win over Sporting, has taken a couple of steps towards the record still held by Gerd Müller, the all-time top scorer in European leagues. Messi now tallies 301 goals for Barcelona in league competition and has just taken third place in the ranking of goalscorers in European leagues. In Gijón, the Argentinean surpassed the French player Delio Onnis, who scored 299 times and is the all-time top scorer in the French league.

The next one in Messi's sights is Jimmy Greaves, who ran up a total of 357 goals in the English league. Messi is still a long way off but the figure is not out of his reach if he keeps up his customary goalscoring rate. So far this campaign he has struck 14 times. The least optimistic expect another 14 league goals. Nobody really imagines that next season Messi will reduce his figures which, if he gets back to 'normal' -this season he has been out for two months with an injury-, would be enough to make him the second all-time league goalscorer in Europe by the end of the 2016-17 season.

The greatest marksman of them all is the German Gerd 'Torpedo' Müller who, in his long career at Bayern Munich, according to Sport, bagged 365 goals in the Bundesliga, an all-time record. Messi is a long way off this figure, but it seems he still has several seasons left at the Camp Nou and will be able to surpass the legendary Gerd Müller in the not-too-distant future.
