Edson Arantes do Nascimento, 'Pelé', considered by many to be the greatest player ever, took a look at the current state of football in an interview he gave with the prestigious Brazilian magazine Placar. "I always joke about the same thing. Nowadays, Pelé would be a lot better than he was before because the preparation is so much better now. Talent is something God gives you, but if you also given the best possible preparation..."

Pelé does not think that Neymar is among the best players in the history of Santos: "Neymar is a good player, but how many goals does he score with his head. Vasconcelos [a legendary player from before Pelé's time] was ten times better than Neymar. Neymar is a forward, he plays going forward. He doesn't get back, he doesn’t organize the game, he doesn’t play the ball out. It's difficult to compare him to others when he has so many shortcomings."

The Brazilian believes that Messi is at another level altogether: "Messi has been the best over the last 10 years. But he’s not a great header of the ball and he uses his left foot more than the right; he’s not two-footed. Right now, though, he’s the best. A while ago, it was Cristiano Ronaldo, who was like Ronaldo Nazario."

According to Pelé, Messi has an advantage that other great players of his generation do not have. "Leo has the same style as Maradona. He is lucky, because he has nobody to be compared with. In my day, I was compared with Beckenbauer, Sócrates or Dirceu Lopes, who was outrageously good."
