And despite declaring his admiration for the season the Rojiblancos have posted, he admitted that he hopes Carlo Ancelotti’s men win the clash in Lisbon.

In an interview with radio station Cadena SER, Rajoy confirmed that he will be at the final on 24 May, a date which coincides with a day of electoral silence in Spain ahead of the European elections.

“I think it’s my duty to go to Lisbon, and in this case it overlaps with my passion,” Spain’s PM explained.

Rajoy, who is a supporter of Liga Adelante side Deportivo La Coruña, added that it is no secret he has been a Real Madrid member for several years, and will therefore be rooting for Los Blancos.

However, he heaped praise on Atlético’s “impressive” campaign. “They have made for a strong and exciting league. I take my hat off to them, but I want Madrid to win,” he said.
