Ivan Rakitic is now officially an FC Barcelona player. The Croatia international has committed himself to Barça for the next five seasons. Rakitic passed a medical in Brazil on Monday, later putting his signature to the relevant documents which will tie him to the Catalan club. While Barcelona claim that the operation cost around 18 million euros, Sevilla mention a slightly higher figure. Also included in the deal is Barça B player Denis Suárez who joins Sevilla on a two-year loan, while the Blaugranas have reserved an option to recover the player should they see fit, for six million euros.

Barcelona announced the news late on Monday evening. Rakitic was requested by Luis Enrique, who has been a keen admirer of the player since his days at Schalke 04. Dejan Rakitic had listened to a number of offers - amongst them one from Atlético but the player preferred on a move to Camp Nou while Barcelona was the ideal destination for Sevilla.

Rakitic leaves Sevilla after three and a half seasons and his departure has not gone down well with supporters who are angry with club President José Castro who, back in January, assured that the captain would not be sold. Another controversial episode included the decision not to included images of Rakitic celebrating Sevilla’s Europa League triumph in the club magazine. The Croatian has requested an opportunity to formally bid fans farewell in a press conference on his return from Brazil, it remains to be seen whether this will take place or not.
