Dutchman Björn Kuipers will be the referee for the Champions League final between Real Madrid and Atlético Madrid on 24 May in Lisbon. The official, who is 41 years old, has been on the FIFA list since 2006 and has been in charge of 68 European ties, including four in this season’s Champions League and three in the Europa League.

He’s whistled two games involving Real Madrid, with a draw and a loss for the Spanish side. The first was a 1-1 draw against CSKA Moscow in the Champions League round of 16 in 2011/12 and the most recent, the 4-1 loss to Dortmund in the away leg of the Champions League semi-finals last year.

For the red and white half of the capital, Kuipers has only been in charge of one game – against Chelsea, which ended 2-2, in the group stage of the Champions League 2009/10.

At international level Kuipers was the referee for the final of the Confederations Cup, won by Brazil 3-0, over Spain last summer.

Kuipers will have countrymen Sander van Roekel and Erwin Zeinstra running his lines and in the boxes Pol van Boekel and Richard Liesveld also from the Netherlands. The fourth official will be Turk Cüneyt Çakır and additional assitant referee will be Angelo Boonman from the Netherlands.
