Nico Rosberg is the first winner of the 2016 Formula 1 championship. Everything went right for the German driver, especially as right from the off, his team-mate, Lewis Hamilton, every bookmaker's favourite, lost all the options he might have had to take this race. The red flag, raised after the collision between Alonso and Gutiérrez, worked against Sebastian Vettel's interests, after he had benefitted greatly from Hamilton's botched start.

After the delay, strategies suddenly changed. Many drivers, like Rosberg or Hamilton themselves, took a risk and mounted medium tyres to get them through to the end of the race. Others, like Vettel, went for a more aggressive strategy and chose the softer tyres which, in the end, turned out to be the wrong option. It was a something of a bittersweet race for Ferrari, since they went from having the chance of getting the first two places to having to make do Vettel's final third, since Kimi Räikkönen's car went up in smoke.

Further back, the battle between Carlos Sainz and Max Verstappen added a little spice to the last third of the race. The Dutchman was riled because he asked several times if he could overtake the Spanish driver, but Sainz was engaged in combat, first with Jolyon Palmer and later with Valtteri Bottas, and defended his position to perfection. Verstappen's aggressiveness almost cost Toro Rosso a heavy price, as he rammed into Sainz, but there were no consequences more serious than the spin his car did.

The positive surprise was Romain Grosjean, who chalked up an impressive sixth place for the Haas team who were making their Formula 1 debut.
