Rubén Garcia, Levante midfielder, said today that his side would try to win on Sunday against Atlético in Valencia, given that his side are still not mathematically safe from relegation and added that “if we have to screw up Atleti’s league, so be it.” Atlético Madrid need two wins from their last three games to win the league. After Levante they play Málaga at home and Barcelona away.

“If they beat us they’ve basically sewn the league up. They’ll come here with that mentality, but we’ll make it difficult for them”, he said in the press conference after training. He also said the game would be very difficult against Atleti's “animals”.

He then moved onto more controversial topics, denying that the players had been offered a win bonus by the other clubs involved in the fight for the league Real Madrid and Barcelona (the rumours are that it is a common practice in Spain, with ‘maletines’, briefcases stuffed with cash being on offer for the players from the other clubs). However he then went on to ask why the players shouldn’t be allowed to receive such incentives.

“As if there’ll be an economic ‘regalito’ (little gift). No.” he scoffed, before saying “but if there was one and it’s for winning, why not go for it?”

Given the scandalised reactions to his words, he later apologised: “I’m sorry for the words I used, that wasn’t the right way to talk, but clearly we are going to try and win all the games we have left”.
