Diego Simeone attended AS TV during Atlético’s celebratory post-match dinner at Madrid’s Di María restaurant and was prudent as he weighed up the team’s chances ahead of tomorrow’s semi-final draw.

Post-match analysis: “I’m happy because we did a good job, the lads worked hard and that breeds confidence, enthusiasm and happiness for our fans. It encourages us to continue working and gives us belief in what we’re doing. But we still haven’t won anything; it was an important match – one which will help us to keep improving”.

What do think you’ll be doing on May 24? “There’s still a long way to go before that and we have another tough tie to get through. I just want the fans to savour this historic moment because it’s not easy to reach the semi-finals of the Champions League”.

Message to the players: “I’d like to congratulate them and thank them. What they are working towards isn’t a product of what the coach tells them, it’s a consequence of what the team requires and that the best thing any coach could want from a group of footballers”.

Semi-final opponents: “We’re not thinking about that. We’re looking ahead to Sunday’s game against Getafe and after that we’ll start preparing for the tie. We’re not a position to able to choose who we will face but we are ready to take on whichever side we get in the draw and our plan is to continue being a competitive team just like we have been up until now”.

Would you prefer to avoid Real Madrid? “No, we want to be able to compete against whoever we are drawn against. It’s out of our hands; we only want to continue competing which is our strong point”.

The key to keeping the squad in peak physical shape: “The secret is having a great physical trainer [Óscar Ortega] and the hard work that all of those who work alongside him do every day”.
