Torres: “I’ve been away for a year – it was great to hear my name”

The Spanish national squad arrived this morning at the Spain Federation’s training ground in Las Rozas, around 10.30am, and some of them took time to speak to the waiting press. Fernando Torres admitted to his happiness at being involved with the national side again: “It’s been a year without being involved. I knew it could go either way. Yesterday I was just waiting for one o’clock, to see if my name would be there. I knew it might or might not be, but I’ve got a better chance of going to Brazil now. I’m grateful to Del Bosque for what he said, talking about my contribution in the latter stages. Now I’m going to fight to see if I can make it onto the definitive list for Brazil”.

Does being in this squad mean you’ll be going to Brazil?

This is for game against Bolivia. I want to use the week the best I can, enjoy it, and hopefully be on the final list. It’s a big step but in football, until it’s in the bag, anything can happen.

Competition up front

I always enjoy rivalry, with anyone. Here, there’s been a lot of competition since 2008: Morientes, Raúl, Villa, Soldado, Negredo... now Costa. The quality is very high, but we’re not rivals, we’re teammates and no matter who plays they’ll be supported by everyone.

Is this a reward?

I’m delighted. I can’t wait to get going. It’s been an odd year all round, a year of changes, at the club. We’ve been close to everything, but we’ve won nothing after years of winning titles. Personally it’s been similar. But to be here is an immense reward.

Atleti and Madrid players, tired?

Yes, to a certain extent. The players from Madrid will be euphoric, but the Atleti players will be too, after their amazing season. The players here are from the biggest sides, so it’s normal that they arrive tired, having played more. But we had that problem at the last World Cup and in the European Championships...

Confederations Cup in Brazil

It was a good test. We know what we’re going to find there. It’ll be a hostile atmosphere, we know what to expect.

I’ve played less than in other seasons and maybe that’s good for my physical state. I feel really good.

Atleti’s defeat in the Champions League

It was hard to take, because Atleti were so close...

The team will train in Madrid every day before heading to Sevilla on Thursday for the game on Friday against Bolivia.
