Villa insists Atleti are “not getting carried away”

David Villa presented his new ‘adizero F50’ boots at an event held at the NH Manzanares Hotel this morning and afterwards, the striker answered questions from the media. El Guaje assures that Atlético, who need just four points from two games to clinch the league title, won’t let the pressure affect them.

The Levante result must have been a huge blow - until Madrid were held by Valencia...

That’s the beauty of football – situations can change from one minute to the next and so you can never take anything for granted. Thankfully, even after slipping up we still depend on ourselves and that’s the most important thing. Right now, all we are thinking about is the Málaga game.

It seemed as though the ball just didn’t want to enter for Atlético at Levante?

When you get to this level, it’s very difficult. It shows how complicated it is to keep winning week after week – like we have been doing throughout the campaign. Every team goes through slumps and yesterday’s defeat only goes to show that it can happen to anyone; it also demonstrates how difficult is it to achieve what Atleti have done this season.

Finally Atlético will have a whole week to prepare for a game; that must be a nice feeling for you?

Of course! The more time you have to prepare and analyze your rival, the better. We have no midweek commitments now and that will help us in the three ‘finals’ that remain. The way it has been for Atleti this season, it’s not surprising that the players don’t have time to rest. We’ve have managed well so far but not playing every three days will be a big help.

As a former Barça player yourself, can you see them taking it easy on the final day if there is a chance that Real Madrid could snatch the title?

We’re not making any assumptions. For us, the reality is straightforward: we need to win our remaining games to be crowned champions. I would Barcelona feel the same way. The only thing on our minds is that the league now depends on us alone. We’re not thinking about Barça yet, we’re focused on the next game – against Málaga. After that we’ll start thinking about Barça.

You haven’t found the net since the away meeting with Celta on 8 March, is that a worry?

I’m fine. Obviously, it’s a striker’s job to b scoring goals and I would like to be scoring more but the team hasn’t needed me to. I’m happy and delighted to be part of a side which is on the verge of doing something really important.

Do you see yourself still at Atleti next season?

Now’s not the time to talk about that – it would be selfish of me and it’s something I have never done in similar situations during my career.

Would you like to be given more minutes with the team?

I’m in a side which is battling to win the league and the Champions League and who made it to the Copa del Rey semi-finals. That’s something which we should all feel happy about – those who a regulars in the team and those who don’t get as many minutes. However often we play, we always have to help out and that’s the role in see myself in.

Can you see yourself in the Spain squad at Brazil 2014?

It’s the same as the earlier question – it’s decision for the coach, not me. We’re lucky in that we have enjoyed a few years when Spain has had an abundance of quality players. The coach has a lot of players to choose from and he will choose those who he thinks will represent us the best. Vicente knows what he is doing and he will choose the 23 best players. I don’t have to tell you that I would be absolutely thrilled if I get the chance to go. Thank God that in our national side, we have fierce competition for every position in the team. It’s good to have so many options available.
