Win the only option for Spain against Chile

AS AS 18/06/2014 Juanma Trueba

Firstly, it is fundamental to defeat Chile this evening. Not even this, and a win over Australia, would guarantee Spain a place in the last 16. The side need to also chip into the six goal swing that the Chile side holds over them, should the two sides finish level on points. The goals that aren't scored today will have to be scored against Australia. This is obviously assuming we beat Chile, and they then beat Holland, which would be quite possible, given that should the Dutch down Australia today, they would essentially be through.

It is difficult. Spain don't have a goal scorer, form or fitness. Also, we don't know what the hammering in the first game might have done to the group.

Until now, it's all pessimism. From here on, reasons to be positive. Spain deserve full credit for their position as world and European champions. This means knowledge and experience. Their pride has been hurt, which could well serve as a stimulus to gain revenge.

There's more. Chile announced themselves as a ferocious side four years ago. They were disappointing against Australia, despite winning 3-1. Vidal, their best player, had an operation on May 7 and still isn't fully fit and is doubtful for today.

In their first game, their intense pressing game lasted 14 minutes. They were 2-0 up, and from then on in they struggled to defend. Lack of height at the back: Isla (1.76), Medel (1.72), Jara (1.78) and Mena (1.73 means that they are at a disadvantage. There is a rumour that Sampaoli will take a leaf from Van Gaal's book and play a fifth defender, but the average height wouldn't exactly shoot up.

The changes made by Spain will perhaps be the most intriguing thing about this match. There is talk of one change per line, but you never know. We can remember back to Switzerland in 2010. Navas and Torres played rather than Silva and Iniesta. For some, the fact Torres spoke at the press conference yesterday means he will play (those who talk usually play). Pedro is in everyone's team, Juanfran is an alternative to Jordi Alba, with Azpilicueta moving to the left, and Javi Martínez could come in for Piqué. Casillas will be looking to make amends in goal.

The match will be played at the Maracaná. The same stadium where the final will be played. We thought it would be the stadium where our tournament would be decided, but on July 13, and not June 18.
