Xabi-Busquets deployed in holding double pivot role

Vicente del Bosque continues to mull over which starting XI to field for Spain’s 2014 Brazil opener against Holland. In Tuesday’s open training session, the coach tried out two different teams, both with just one midfielder while in the most recent session (which was closed to the media) he experimented again, deploying Xabi Alonso and Sergio Busquets as two holding midfielders.

Del Bosque last used a two-man holding midfield in the 1-0 win over France in Saint-Denis at the group stage – a system he may well revert to tomorrow. His main doubt is whether to start with Pedro or Silva. The Barça forward guarantees goals but Silva is in a golden moment of form and it would difficult for the coach to leave him out. Up front, del Bosque is almost certain to use one, lone striker. Diego Costa has made a full recovery from his hamstring injury but he could be nudged out of the line-up by an in-form Fernando Torres. Cesc Fàbregas meanwhile, has only started when Spain have come up against a five-man defence.

A conceivable line-up against the 2010 finalists on Friday reads: Casillas; Azpilicueta, Ramos, Piqué, Alba; Xabi Alonso, Busquets; Pedro or Silva, Xavi, Iniesta and Diego Costa.
