Zinedine Zidane was pleased with the victory earned at the Stadio Olimpico after having a much tougher time than expected in the first half: "Roma worked well and made life difficult for us in the first half. We improved a lot in the second. We knew the difficulties we were going to face. They pressured us a lot."

As well as the victory over Roma, the hug that Cristiano Ronaldo gave him when celebrating Real Madrid's first goal was much commented. There had been doubts about him as a result of the 'criticism' he had received for his lack of goals in away games. Zidane played down the importance of the hug and and the pressure that Ronaldo was supposedly under: "I did not think he was overly stressed before the game, he was just the same as he always is and in the goal celebration he came over to me and the team-mates in the dugout. We are a group and we celebrate as a group."

The Blanco manager does not believe that the tie is done and dusted because in football anything can happen until the final whistle: "We are happy with the result because we kept a clean sheet and scored twice ourselves. Tonight we will sleep happily, from tomorrow on we have to think about the game against Málaga."

Zidane was asked about the atmosphere in the dressing room and the fact that the players seem much more united lately: "I haven't done anything. They are the most important thing. For a manager, and I have been a player, it is essential to be united. There's nothing nicer than to see the ones who aren't going to play urging the team on in the dressing room. When you're united you can achieve things. It's a joy to see a group of players celebrating together like that."

Before finishing the press conference in Rome, the Madrid manager was asked about the situation in the league and whether Barcelona's victory in Gijón complicated matters further: "I am still thinking the same thing. We are seven points behind and it is now a little more difficult, but we are giving it everything we've got."
