  • People are boycotting Goya products in response to the company's CEO voicing support of President Trump during a meeting at the White House last Thursday.
  • Prominent Latinx figures Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez and Lin-Manuel Miranda expressed interest in a homemade recipe for Goya's flagship seasoning, Adobo.
  • On Saturday, an Instagram account shared a recipe for homemade Adobo seasoning, in support of boycotters.
  • The recipe contains all the same ingredients that are listed for the product on Goya's website, save for tricalcium phosphate, which Goya lists as an "anticaking agent."

Last Thursday, Goya CEO Robert Unanue's comment that the US is "truly blessed" to have a leader like President Donald Trump led to an immediate backlash from the left in the form of a boycott of Goya products. Over the weekend, the reaction intensified after Unanue did not apologize for his comments during an interview on Friday with FOX news: "I'm not apologizing, why would I?"

Since then, boycotters began circulating a homemade recipe for one of Goya's flagship products, Adobo seasoning.

Interest in a homemade Adobo recipe workaround was Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez's first response to Unanue's statement. "Oh look, it's the sound of me googling 'how to make your own Adobo'" she said on Thursday.

Lin-Manuel Miranda also mentioned taking the DIY route with a sense of confidence in the kitchen that came from months of quarantine baking.

By Saturday, an Instagram account @wereleavingearly, which describes itself as "a guide to staying informed without losing your minds" had posted a recipe for homemade Adobo. The illustrated label touts the homemade product as "ignorance free."

The ingredients in the recipe match those listed on Goya's website, save for tricalcium phosphate, which Goya lists as an "anticaking agent." The spices included in Adobo seasoning are common household spices that many might already have on hand, especially after months of at-home cooking in quarantine.

With this recipe available, many consumers are echoing the top comment on the recipe post from Instagram user @sweet_digs: "We good. We don't need NO DAMN ADOBO!"
