The scene of Swara Bhasker pleasuring herself with a vibrator to 'charam sukh' in Veere Di Wedding has ruffled quite a few feathers. While some are lauding the makers for including a mas********* scene, others are not too happy about it.

Vice reached out to Swara's mother, Ira Bhaskar, a film historian and professor of Cinema Studies at Jawaharlal Nehru University. "Let me begin by saying that sexuality per se in Indian cinema is not a subject that has been directly expressed," she said, adding that sexuality and eroticism was obliquely hinted at through songs.

"I think there is a shift. From very metaphoric and symbolic articulation, there is a movement towards much more direct articulation," Ira said, talking about the trend in recent films.

"For example, if you look at Veer Zaara, the 'Tere Liye' song sequence, it is very clear it is yearning. But in films like Fire, like Lipstick Under My Burkha and now Veere Di Wedding, or something like Anarkali of Aarah... Here is a woman who enjoys her performance. She is sexually active. She makes no qualms about what she wants. She wants to not be in a position of being humiliated for being who she is. Her choice and agency is very important. Here is a woman who is confident of her own sexuality," she elaborated.

Swara was criticised for her mas********* scene in Veere Di Wedding by a section of trolls who claimed that they went to watch the films with the grandmothers, and were embarrassed and "ashamed". However, the actress was unfazed and shut them down with a savage response.

Directed by Shashanka Ghosh, Veere Di Wedding revolves around four friends or 'veeres' (brothers) - Kalindi (Kareena Kapoor Khan), Avni (Sonam Kapoor), Sakshi (Swara Bhasker) and Meera (Shikha Talsania). The film is currently racing towards the Rs 50-crore mark at the box office.
