People in the UAE can give vital support to the One Billion Meals initiative when they next order a takeaway.

Leading food delivery app Deliveroo is backing the ambitious UAE campaign to provide food to needy people in 50 countries.

Those using the app can donate Dh10, Dh50, Dh100, Dh300 or AED500 to bolster the fast-rising fundraising tally

The international drive is being led by Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum Global Initiatives.

Using the contributions, basic ingredients will be secured to provide nutritious meals for less fortunate families and people around the world.

“We are proud to be in a position where we can use our unique network to contribute to the fight against food poverty and we look forward to continuing the spirit of donation and kindness at Deliveroo in the UAE,” said Anis Harb, general manager of Deliveroo in the GCC.

“Giving back with humanitarian work is a permanent goal we seek at Deliveroo.”

Donors can also contribute directly to the One Billion Meals campaign through the website www.1billionmeals.ae

Donations can be made via the call centre number 8009999.

Headquartered in London, the food delivery service Deliveroo operates in 11 countries and works with 148,000 restaurants and grocery chains.

Sheikh Mohammed bin Rashid, Vice President and Ruler of Dubai, launched One Billion Meals at the start of Ramadan.

More than Dh420 million has already been raised - with the campaign set to continue until it hits its lofty target to provide one billion meals to people in need in 50 countries.

Rare number plate auctions were held in Dubai last Saturday and Abu Dhabi on Wednesday in aid of the scheme.

Abu Dhabi's exclusive '2' car number plate sold for Dh23.3 million ($6.3m) at the charity auction in the capital.

A total of Dh111m was raised on Wednesday night in bids for rare licence plates and exclusive mobile phone numbers.
