One witness said he understood more than 20 people were on the ride when it came to a stop at about 4.40pm.

Nine were initially helped down by "experienced engineers" from about 6pm, with a further dozen remaining stranded for a longer period, according to witnesses.

Reports on social media said a maintenance cage was used to help in the major operation to clear those stuck, reports Gazette Live.

A spokesperson from Flamingo Land said last night: "Due to a minor mechanical issue, the Kumali rollercoaster train stopped a short distance up the initial ascent, in accordance with it's safety systems.

"Customers were safely evacuated from the ride as per our standard training and formal procedures by our experienced engineers and operations team."

Kumali is named after the leader of Flamingo Land Resort’s own lion pride and according to its website it is the attraction’s “sensational showpiece looping suspended coaster”.

It adds: “For extreme ride fans this is a real showstopper, with its unique custom layout and a breathtaking top speed of 56mph.

“Featuring a total of four inversions, you’ll experience up to 4.7g from a mix of our 87 foot tall loop, 55 foot Zero-G roll and the Cobra Roll, or Boomerang, which suspends you over one of our lakes at a height of 75 feet!

“To complete this world-class attraction, African theming and dedicated music composed by Electric Street Police makes it look and sound as good as the adrenaline rush it’s guaranteed to deliver.”
