(TAP) – Minister of Trade Omar El Béhi announced, on Thursday, the start of studies on the implementation of a citrus fruit production market in Cap Bon (Menzel Bouzelfa).

This project, which will be operational within two years, will be carried out with a contribution from the State, in collaboration with 5 municipalities as part of the public/private partnership (PPP).

In a statement to TAP correspondent in the region, on the sidelines of the information day on the theme: "the citrus fruit market, the development hub of Cap Bon", the Minister described cooperation with the municipalities of Menzel Bouzelfa, Beni Khaled, Zaouiet Jedidi, Soliman and Takelssa as a "pilot experience".

It includes the creation of a citrus production market that will ensure the supply of wholesale markets and bring together producers and traders, he said.

He added that this experience, which will be open to other municipalities, will contribute to improving the added value of agricultural products and also testifies to the willingness of these municipalities to better organise citrus fruit distribution channels and to offer the appropriate space that respects modern international standards governing production markets.

The Minister of Trade stressed the mission that will be carried out by the citrus fruit production market, especially since less than 30% of citrus fruit production goes through the wholesale market and about 70% of production is marketed in unorganized channels, which causes prices to rise, particularly, consumer prices, in addition to the deterioration in selling prices at the farmer's level.

In addition to collecting large quantities of citrus fruits, this market will make it possible to organize sales according to quality and size and will also ensure product traceability.

The project for the citrus fruit production market in Cap Bon also includes the establishment of at least one citrus fruit processing unit.
