A new, four-way intersection called the Saeed Mohammed Saeed Al Midfa Square was opened in Sharjah on Tuesday, targeting to curb traffic congestion in the area.

The Sharjah Roads and Transport Authority (SRTA), in collaboration with the Sharjah Police, finished the Dh37-million road development in 11 months, a month ahead of schedule, said Fatima Al Kitbi, director of road projects, SRTA.

Controlled by traffic lights, "the square is strategically located between Al Darari and Al Tarfa areas, along with Industrial Areas 12 and 13", Al Kitbi said.

The development entailed an overhaul of the intersection, including all the two-way roads leading to it, she said.

"Up to 950 metre of the road leading to the University City, 400 metre of the Sheikh Abdullah Bin Sultan Al Qasimi Road, 300 metre of the Fourth Industrial Road, and 600 metre of a lane linked with the Sheikh Khalifa Bin Zayed Road had been removed," Al Kitbi said.

"The roads at the intersection have been expanded to three lanes for those driving ahead, and other lanes for those turning left or making a U-turn."

Some other routes have been amended as part of the project, she said. "The conflicting service lines have also been amended, as well as other development services."

The Saeed Mohammed Saeed Al Midfa Square is a project that stemmed from the vision and instruction of His Highness Dr Sheikh Sultan bin Mohammed Al Qasimi, Member of the Supreme Council and Ruler of Sharjah.
