Former Bachelor star Emily Ghougassian (née Simms) has been rushed to a critical care unit after giving birth to her first child prematurely.

The makeup artist, 36, and her partner Pierre welcomed baby daughter Laila Belle on Wednesday.

Emily was just 33 weeks pregnant when she gave birth, making Laila approximately seven weeks premature.

In an Instagram post, the couple revealed their new baby is fine, but that Emily is being treated for pre-eclampsia and HELLP syndrome.

'Laila Belle Ghougassian, born 03.07.2019, at 2:24pm, weighing 2.022kg,' the post read.

'Baby is doing well and has been moved out of ICU and into the special care nursery as of today.

'Mum is not doing so great, with severe pre-eclampsia and HELLP syndrome, and is in the critical care unit.'

What is pre-eclampsia?

Pre-eclampsia is a disorder of pregnancy where blood pressure is elevated, which can potentially cause damage to liver and kidneys.

It affects around five to eight per cent of pregnancies in Australia and in some rare cases it can be deadly.

Symptoms include:

- Nausea and vomiting

- Dizziness

- Headache

- Abdominal pain

HELLP (haemolysis, elevated liver enzymes, low platelet count) syndrome is a potentially life-threatening pregnancy complication that usually develops after pre-eclampsia.

Babies that weigh under 2.5kg may need help breathing and may require caring for in an intensive care unit (ICU) until they've developed further.

With little Laila weighing just 2.022kg, she spent one day in the ICU before being transferred to a special care unit.

Emily was first forced to seek medical treatment on Friday - the same weekend that her baby shower was scheduled.

In a post shared earlier this week, the former reality star wrote: 'After being in hospital now with diagnosed pre-eclampsia since Friday last week, feeling like death, not being able to make it to my baby shower last Sunday, and just trying to keep her in for a bit longer, it's been emotionally and physically really difficult (to say the least).

Premature babies

Pregnancies usually last 40 weeks

Babies born before the 37th week are considered premature

Babies born before 32 weeks or weighing 2.5kg or less may require treatment in an intensive care unit

'But thank God I have this guy. I've fallen in love with my husband so much more over the last week. He's been by my side almost every minute.'

Emily added that Pierre attended her baby shower in her absence.

The brunette tied the knot with real estate agent Pierre in August 2018, just a year after they first met.

She rose to fame in 2015 when she appeared as a contestant on Sam Wood's season of The Bachelor Australia.

Emily memorably stormed off the set of the show during a rose ceremony to avoid being eliminated by Sam.

After the series wrapped, she publicly lashed out at Channel Ten and accused them of portraying her as a villain through selective editing.
