WARNING: This article contains spoilers for Game of Thrones season 8, episode 4.

You've heard the saying 'wearing your heart on your sleeve', but when it comes to Game of Thrones' resident dragon queen, Daenerys Targaryen, she chooses to wear her emotions in her hair.

The breaker of chains has long used her platinum braids as a record of her successes in battle and an indicators of her mental state, with her hairstyles growing more elaborate with every passing season.

In recent episodes, her hair has been piled atop her head in a series of intricate plaits, likely as a sign of her growing power.

However, that is likely to change following the tragic execution of Daenerys' trusted advisor and handmaiden, Missandei, at the hands of Cersei Lannister.

Fans will know that Missandei was the one responsible for creating Daenerys' elaborate hairstyles, and a grainy screen-grab from the episode five trailer suggests that with her gone, Daenerys is resorting to wearing her hair down.

While the loss of Missandei is undeniably an emotional and sartorial step backward for Daenerys, it goes deeper than mere aesthetics.

Daenerys' costume evolution on the show has been wide-ranging, but it's rare to see her not looking put-together, even in the midst of battle.

The fact that her long blonde tresses are now undone could be the writers' way of suggesting she's become unhinged by the loss of her right-hand woman and two of her dragons.

With mounting rumours pointing to Daenerys becoming the 'Mad Queen' just like her father, Aerys Targaryen, this could be yet another piece in the lunacy puzzle.
