There are plenty of tricky decisions when it comes to wedding planning, but one most couples make early on is whether they want children at their ceremony or not.

It's becoming increasingly common for couples to decide on kid-free weddings, especially when they know there's going to be plenty of alcohol, but one groom has been "excommunicated" by his stepmother after deciding on an adults only wedding.

Sharing his story to Reddit, the man explained that he and his fiancé had their hearts set on a kid-free wedding from the start but hadn't had the chance to inform his family.

He wrote that his stepsister has a one-year-old son who is the only child on his side of the family, so he had planned to tell her about his decision over the holidays, but hadn't found the right moment.

With his wedding planned for October, it wasn't until his stepmother brought it up that he realised there might be a problem.

"She started talking about how she had picked out [my nephew's] tuxedo for the wedding and was excited," he wrote, adding that he took the chance to inform his stepmother that the wedding would be adults only.

"She seemed taken aback but then said that it would upset my stepsister and my father."

He called up his stepsister to let her know her son wouldn't be invited, but that he was happy to pay for a babysitter so that they could still attend his wedding.

Though she was upset by the news and decided she and her husband would no longer attend, the groom understood where they were coming from and figured the issue had been dealt with.

"About 5 minutes later I get a call from my father and step-mother who are furious with me," he wrote.

"They say how could I do this to the family, my nephew is family… They told me I was going down a wrong path and I was selfish."

They also told him that he had to "talk to his fiance" as if the whole thing was her idea, suggesting that she doesn't value family, then said that they were "done with his BS" and never wanted to speak to him or see him again.

"My step mother told me she was going to call all of that side of my family (parents are divorced) and tell everyone not to come," he added.

She even went so far as to call his fiance's mother to give her a piece of her mind, the groom's soon to be mother-in-law refusing to say what his stepmother had said, though she did call the other woman a "nasty piece of work."

Now the groom has been left with no idea what to do; he's dodging their calls while consoling his fiance, who feels that the situation is all her fault, and doesn’t know if he'll be able to forgive his stepmother.

But the people of Reddit insisted that the blame lay with his family, specifically his stepmother.

"They say you and her don't appreciate family but are kicking you out? Are you not family?" questioned one frustrated Reddit user in the comments.

Another questioned: "Why are they excommunicating you over a one-year-old's attendance?"

"That baby will never remember your wedding day and likely would never care that he wasn’t invited."
