Housing Minister and Assistant Treasurer Michael Sukkar has confirmed there was no cyber breach of the Australian Taxation Office website, as it pauses early superannuation requests until Monday.

“We’ve had 1.2 million people apply for early release of superannuation which is well over $10 billion,” Mr Sukkar told Sky News.

The Australian Taxation Office on Thursday confirmed it was conducting an investigation into the government’s early access to super scheme, after a tax agent had personal details of customers stolen by an online hacker.

“There was one isolated incident where identity theft has been involved and it is being investigated by the AFP,” he said.

“I emphasise this is not a compromise of ATO systems, this is flat out fraud.

“And for today only, the ATO will pause requests for early superannuation.”
