A magpie has been caught on camera chasing a drone through the sky on the Gold Coast.

The drone was flying over the beaches at North Burleigh when its camera spotted the bird hot on its tail.

In true magpie form, the bird is shown swooping several times at the drone.

Magpie swooping season has started across the country, with several people reporting attacks while riding bikes or walking along the footpath.

"Swooping is a territorial behaviour for nest defence, which starts in Spring," Paul McDonald, an Associate Professor in Animal Behaviour at University of New England, told 9News.

"They're trying to keep the chicks safe and get the threat out of the territory. It's about defending their young."
