Fifth person dies waiting for ambulance in South Australia

A man in his 50s has become the fifth person to die waiting for an ambulance in South Australia in nine days.

The Ambulance Employees Association of South Australia confirmed the death and said the man waited two hours for help last night.

Paramedics arrived shortly after the required timeframe and were unable to resuscitate the man.

The union said ambulance crews and communications staff have been "devastated" by the death.

Two people died waiting for ambulances on Monday night.

The union said a 20-year-old man died after it took 45 minutes for an ambulance to arrive.

A 94-year-old woman had fallen and she died after waiting 56 minutes, it said.

Last week two other people died waiting for help.

Both cases were deemed emergencies, but it took paramedics longer to get there than it should have.
