The Morrison government has imposed a travel ban on South Korea and will step up screening measures for people coming from Italy in an attempt to further slow down the spread of COVID-19 in Australia.

Giving an update on the situation in Canberra on Thursday, Prime Minister Scott Morrison said the decision to add South Korea to the travel ban list, and not Italy, was due to the high numbers of travellers from the nation.

“In relation to Korea, the reason we have taken this decision is because of the high level of visitation we are seeing from Korea then we have seen come from Italy,” Mr Morrison said.

“So that ban is put in place because it affords the best protection and enables us to slow down the rate of transmission.”

Currently there are two deaths and 53 infections confirmed due to the disease within Australia.
