An almost instantaneous paper-strip test could transform Australia’s approach to managing the coronavirus if politicians allow themselves to “start thinking creatively” according to Sky News host Andrew Bolt.

The new spit testing method takes up to 10 minutes to produce a positive or negative result and can be used by the general public.

Mr Bolt said the test yourself kit costs just $1.50-$3.00 and could help to pick up those individuals who carry the virus asymptomatically.

However, he said governments are not currently using the new test because they want to “control the process”.

Studies have shown these results are "nowhere near as accurate as the swab up your nose” and generally don’t pick up low viral loads during the first hours of infection or towards the end of the recovery stage, he said.

“But this test is so cheap and easy that you just test yourself every day, and you'll soon know, when it counts,” Mr Bolt said.

Mr Bolt said lives as well as the economic future of Australia could hang on whether the Australian government promotes and takes advantage of the new COVID-19 testing methods on offer.
