A man has been rushed to hospital after he was seriously injured in a massive explosion at a council workplace site in Sydney's south-western outskirts.

Emergency crews rushed to the Camden Council depot site in Millwood Avenue, Narellan, shortly after 11.20 am on Wednesday.

Multiple NSW ambulance and fire crews were deployed, along with a Toll Rescue Helicopter with a critical care doctor and paramedic on board, which arrived on the scene within 10 minutes.

A man, 41, who was working at the site as a contractor, was treated by paramedics at the scene for serious burns to his back, chest, stomach, arms and face.

He required intubation and was airlifted to the Royal North Shore Hospital burns unit in a serious but stable condition.

A Fire and Rescue NSW spokesman told Daily Mail Australia it's understood the explosion was sparked by a worker using an angle grinder.

The explosion rocked neighbouring businesses in the industrial precinct.

Brian Cruikshank from D.C & O Services & Products heard a 'massive bang.'

'I felt the shockwaves through the workshop,' he told NCA NewsWire.

'A bunch of people had come out of their warehouses and were standing around trying to figure out what happened.'

Paramedics said the incident could have been much worse.

'Paramedics arrived to a very challenging scene,' Inspector Andrew Cullen said.

'The man had some serious partial thickness burns to his torso, his arms and face.

The critical care team stabilised him via intubation, and he was airlifted to the burns unit at Royal North Shore Hospital.

'Explosions are always dangerous, and this incident could have been much worse.'

NSW Police said inquiries into the circumstances surrounding the explosion are underway.

SafeWork NSW will also investigate the incident.

'The matter is currently under investigation, and council is assisting authorities with their investigations,' a Camden Council spokeswoman said.

'Accordingly, it would be inappropriate for the council to make further comment at this stage.'
