Protests continue in Brisbane's CBD this afternoon, despite police making 56 arrests.

The Extinction Rebellion group is currently blocking William Street for a second time today, after the initial protest started shortly after 7am and moved to the intersection of Margaret Street.

Just before 8.30am, police arrested 15 men and 12 women aged between 19 and 65 for contravening directions, obstructing traffic and police and breaching the peace.

Another 29 people have since been arrested for similar offences.

Police said they anticipate further arrests.

William Street remains closed to traffic until at least 2pm.

Police this morning warned the demonstration was likely to continue for hours and would cause peak-hour disruption throughout the CBD and South Brisbane.

The activists are angry at the Queensland government's decision to approve key parts of the Adani Carmichael mine last month and are caller for broad action on climate change and protecting biodiversity.

"Police and partner agencies are working closely to manage the protest and minimise as much as possible disruptions to transportation networks," Superintendent Chris Stream said.

Brisbane Lord Mayor Adrian Schrinner condemned the demonstrators, who he described as "extremists".

He said they were "holding the people of Brisbane to ransom" by their actions.

Last month seven people were arrested and charged after a similar protest in the CBD.
