As officers attempted to arrest a 26-year-old man believed to be responsible for the attack, he fled on foot, Divisional Commander Tony Silva said this afternoon.

After catching up with him down the street, the two policemen were surrounded by a gang of other people.

Video captured by a witnesses shows the officer receiving multiple punches to the head by a man wearing a grey t-shirt, as others watch on.

“One of the (offenders) ‘rag-dolled’ one of the officers, smashing his head into the concrete roadway,” Commander Silva said.

Capsicum spray was used by members of the Public Order Response Unit at the scene to stop the violence.

Both injured policemen were taken to hospital. One officer has since been released with bruising and swelling to the face.

The second officer remains in hospital, and is expected to undergo emergency surgery to his badly broken arm tonight.

Commander Silva described the actions of the offenders as “animalistic”.

“They had that pack mentality, and set upon police who were vulnerable on the ground with the suspect,” he said.

“What I’ve seen through this event is the worst of society… they will find the full force of the law is their future.

“Victoria Police will spare no expense to bring the five to seven suspects to account.”

Victorian Police Association secretary Wayne Gatt said he struggled to watch the footage of the incident.

“I’ve seen a lot of things, but I literally had to hold my breath… this is one of the most horrific assaults on police I’ve seen,” Mr Gatt said.

“These sorts of incidents will have a lasting impact on these members.”

The 26-year-old arrested man remains in custody. No charges have been laid.

All of the suspects on the run - one woman in her 20s and six men - are described as having a Caucasian appearance.
