Chantelle Barrett told concerned loved ones Mrs Dwyer 'was so unfortunate to be critically ill from the influenza. (sic)'

She said 'all efforts were undertaken to provide critical care' but that Mrs Dwyer subsequently lost her battle while still outside of Australia.

Her friend, Dana Walsh, initially created a GoFundMe appeal to help raise the funds needed to bring Mrs Dwyer home, but Ms Barrett confirmed travel insurance covered the expense.

She thanked friends and family for their 'incredible generosity' and said they are now turning their sights toward covering the expenses for Mrs Dwyer's funeral.

She leaves behind a husband and three young boys, who are said to be reeling over her tragic sudden death.

In the GoFundMe campaign, Ms Walsh described her friend as a 'vibrant member of the Darwin community' who will be sadly missed.

'She was an amazing mother and has left behind a young family who are still coming to terms with this tragedy,' she wrote.
