I could just see people running for their lives: "hero" firefighters describe the moment they chased down alleged Sydney CBD murderer

August 19, 2019. NSW Premier Gladys Berejiklian meets the firefighters who chased down the alleged CBD murderer as the man ran through Sydney streets with armed knife. Mitchell Bennetts and Gonzalo Herrara from Drummoyne fire station describe the moments that led to them stepping into the unfolding incident. "A sea of people just running for their lives, then I saw the man, he had a mask, he was covered in blood ... we made eye contact," Bennetts says. "That's when I realised we've got a posse behind us ... and that's when he decided to run," he says. Herrara shrugs-off the title of hero and says, "We just wanted to help people that is it." Mert Ney, 20, is now before the courts charged with the murder of Michaela Dunn, 24, in a Clarence Street unit and stabbing of Linda Bo, 41, in the shoulder at the Hotel CBD before wandering through the city.
