Sky News Political Editor Andrew Clennell says there is no doubt the Labor Party should be working harder to get blue-collared workers in the membership.

“Scott Morrison seems to be winning the war for their vote,” he said.

“There’s no doubt they should be doing more to get blue collared workers in the membership.

“When I was growing up, the toffs were the Liberals, even on a university campus. And now the toffs are Labor. That’s the issue.”

“You even see it a little bit in the media world. People who went to the richest private schools and grew up with wealthy parents seem to gravitate towards the Labor party.

“They (the Labor Party) have to show they’re standing up for the traditional ground of the working class.”

Mr Clennell said a “devastating assessment” of the Labor Party review of the last federal election result was that “the Labor MPs and their staffers got people like themselves to vote for themselves”.

“The people voting them, the people supporting them were from their sort of background,” he said.

“They weren’t tradies.

“Scott Morrison is very preoccupied with tradies.”
