The St. George-Illawarra Dragons have enlisted the services of Shane Flanagan, bringing on the former NRL coach as list management consultant for the upcoming season.

Flanagan was previously a member of the Dragon’s coaching staff under former head coach Paul McGregor, and interim coach Dean Young, before being released by current head coach Anthony Griffin.

However, he has now been brought back on board by the Red V to strengthen the team’s development players.

A former premiership-winning coach with the Cronulla Sharks, Flanagan has somewhat of an infamous career, suspended for one year in 2014 due to his role in the team’s supplement program.

However, in 2018 it was found that Flanagan had breached the terms of his suspension, and was then deregistered as a coach until the end of 2022.

Despite this, he was permitted to return to the league in more minor roles, which were capitalised upon by the Dragons.

According to the Dragons’ general manager of football Ben Haran, Flanagan’s experience was a key reason he was brought in by the club that has struggled in recent years to find consistency.

"To have someone of Shane's calibre return to the Dragons will only complement our football program, particularly in the dynamic environment that is list management," Haran said.

"Shane will work closely with the club's recruitment and retention committee to ensure the Dragons' list remains competitive for many years to come.

"In my time previously working with Shane he clearly demonstrated his vast rugby league knowledge and connections throughout the game. We look forward to him returning to the Dragons."
