The Dallas Cowboys’ surprising release of former Pro Bowl running back Ezekiel Elliott has led to much speculation as to where he will ultimately end up. A number of teams like the New York Jets and the Philadelphia Eagles have already emerged as contenders to sign him. Another prominent AFC team now appears likely to throw their name into consideration.

ESPN’s Jeremy Fowler discussed Elliott’s options on Friday, where he said that the Cincinnati Bengals “could be looming large” as potentially the favorite to sign the veteran running back.

“Talking to some teams and some people around the league, they believe the Bengals could be looming large,” said Fowler. “They are looking to add a running back in either free agency or the draft. Either to pair with Joe Mixon or if they move on from Mixon they could save nearly eight million in cap space. I do expect the Bengals to make a move at some point and Elliott would play into their mold of wanting a power running game.”

Cincinnati notably let veteran running back Samaje Perine walk in free agency, and Elliott profiles as a similar style of player at this point in his career.

If joining a successful team is a contributing factor for Ezekiel Elliott, it certainly seems like joining the Bengals would be a wise move for him.

They have made it to back-to-back AFC Championships, and profile to undoubtedly be a contender to do so again next year with star quarterback Joe Burrow at the helm.
