Spanish Nuns Take Break From Crafting COVID-19 Face Masks to Play Basketball

Nuns from the San Leandro Convent in Seville, Spain, took a break from sewing COVID-19 face masks to play a game of basketball in their courtyard on April 13. Alejandro Ávila Villares posted the footage of the game to Instagram, and he told Storyful: “Being hit by this terrible pandemic, it was a real joy to see these nurses playing happily in their own house, the convent.” The nuns of the San Leandro Convent are known for their signature sweets, yemas de San Leandro, a buttery cookie-like nugget. However, the COVID-19 pandemic has ended demand for the products, with the nuns redirecting their energy to sewing face masks. According to an article from Villares, the covent had crafted and distributed more than 5,000 COVID-19 masks. According to Spain’s Ministry of Health, as of April 16 there had been 182,816 confirmed COVID-19 cases and 19,130 deaths connected to the virus in the country.
