A couple issues is forcing Toyota to recall nearly 70,000 vehicles, including the new C-HR crossover for a faulty parking brake and the Prius Plug-In for a loss of motive power.

The 2018 C-HR is being recalled due to an electronic parking brake that may not engage correctly or may not disengage after it has been applied. If the former were to happen, the vehicle might roll away unattended. In the case of the latter, it would reduce motive power and put strain on the brakes. The recall affects 28,600 vehicles.

Owners will receive a notice by mail in late November, asking them to return their vehicles to dealers, who will update the electronic control unit’s software.

A second recall affects 39,900 Prius Plug-In Hybrids from model years 2012-2015 for an issue with the Electric Vehicle fuse that may malfunction if the sedan is repeatedly operated in EV mode under high-load conditions, such as on long hills. Drivers will be aware of the malfunction through instrument cluster warning lights and messages, and although the car can still be driven, power will be reduced. Another scenario could have the hybrid system shut down, which would result in a loss of motive power. If this were to happen on the highway, it would increase the risk of a crash.

Owners of affected vehicles will be asked to attend the nearest Toyota dealer where the EV fuse will be replaced with a more robust one. Notices will go out in the mail in January 2018.

Owners can also check the status of their vehicles on the Toyota website or by calling (800) 331-4331.
