Jennifer Aniston, Reese Witherspoon, Tom Hanks and other stars urge fans to wear masks to help prevent the spread of COVID-19

It's summer and we're all venturing outside more, especially in the heat and beautiful weather. But it's important to remember the coronavirus pandemic is ongoing and COVID-19 is still spreading and still among us. With that in mind, plenty of celebrities are asking their followers to mask up while in public.

The number of coronavirus cases worldwide continues to climb, especially in the United States. The country has had nearly 3 million confirmed cases this year. More than 52,000 new infections were reported on July 1 alone. While Canada's cases are much lower with about 105,000 confirmed cases since March, Ontario has recorded more than 300 new cases over the last two days.

Jennifer Aniston used her massive Instagram following to highlight the importance of wearing face masks. Medical experts and professionals have recommended wearing face coverings in addition to social distancing and frequent, vigorous hand-washing to help prevent the spread of COVID-19. The former Friends star posted a photo of herself wearing a mask and urged her followers to wear masks when they're out.

I understand masks are inconvenient and uncomfortable. But don’t you feel that it’s worse that businesses are shutting down... jobs are being lost... health care workers are hitting absolute exhaustion. And so many lives have been taken by this virus because we aren’t doing enough. ⠀ ⠀ I really do believe in the basic goodness of people so I know we can all do this 🥰 BUT still, there are many people in our country refusing to take the necessary steps to flatten the curve, and keep each other safe. People seem worried about their “rights being taken away” by being asked to wear a mask. This simple and effective recommendation is being politicized at the expense of peoples’ lives. And it really shouldn’t be a debate 🙏🏼 ⠀ ⠀ If you care about human life, please... just #wearadamnmask 😷 and encourage those around you to do the same ❤️ A post shared by Jennifer Aniston (@jenniferaniston) on Jun 30, 2020 at 2:18pm PDT

"I understand masks are inconvenient and uncomfortable," she wrote in the caption. "But don't you feel that it's worse that businesses are shutting down... jobs are being lost... health care workers are hitting absolute exhaustion. "I really do believe in the basic goodness of people so I know we can all do this," she said, adding an emoji with hearts around it. "BUT still, there are many people in our country refusing to take the necessary steps to flatten the curve, and keep each other safe. People seem worried about their 'rights being taken away' by being asked to wear a mask. This simple and effective recommendation is being politicized at the expense of peoples' lives. And it really shouldn't be a debate."

Reese Witherspoon echoed her The Morning Show co-star's comments, posting a selfie that showed her wearing a giant sun hat to keep herself safe in the heat and a mask to help stop the spread of COVID-19.

"Wearing a mask is not a political statement," she wrote. "It means you care about other people's health and safety. Be KIND, wear a mask!"

Hey Everybody! Wearing a mask is not a political statement. It means you care about other people’s health and safety. Be KIND, wear a mask! #wearadamnmask A post shared by Reese Witherspoon (@reesewitherspoon) on Jun 26, 2020 at 9:14am PDT

Julianne Moore went further, challenging all her followers to post photos of themselves wearing masks in public as she shared one of herself doing so.

"Let's normalize this," she wrote. "Wearing a mask... is a proven method to keep us all healthy."

Doing this again because I got a great suggestion to tag followers rather than celebrities. I challenge ALL of my followers to post a pic of themselves with a mask. Let’s normalize this - wearing a mask is not a political act, it is a proven method to keep us all healthy. #wearadamnmask Thank u @mjmf !@craigwilliams1254 @tadeumelo1974 @deneceryland @beautifullypigmented30 and tag me when u post! 😷 A post shared by Julianne Moore (@juliannemoore) on Jul 2, 2020 at 11:37am PDT

Tom Hanks, who recovered from COVID-19 earlier this year, also encouraged people to wear masks.

"There's really only three things we can do in order to get to tomorrow: Wear a mask, social distance, wash our hands," Tom said in a press conference for his new movie, Greyhound. "Those things are so simple, so easy... It's very basic. If you're driving your car, you don't go too fast, you use your turn signal and you avoid hitting pedestrians."

What is it about the beach that makes you forget everything 🏝 @britneyspears ❤️ A post shared by Sam Asghari (@samasghari) on Jun 22, 2020 at 5:56pm PDT

Britney Spears and her boyfriend Sam Asghari posted two photos of themselves wearing masks at the beach. While the landscape around them was deserted, making it unlikely they would be putting others at risk if they weren't covering their mouths and noses, Sam pointed out in the comments that "there will be millions of people seeing these photos! So it's better to be a good influence."
