But Find Safety is much more than an album and LAL is much more than a group. Find Safety is more a social/political statement than simply a collection of songs, and addresses the need for safer spaces for people who often find themselves pushed to the fringes of society. As Kazi says, “We felt like we needed to make a record that spoke more to our experience being brown/black in Toronto, having travelled all over the world.” And while LAL is the name of the electronic group that features Kazi and Murray, it is also the centre of a movement that involves all of their friends and co-conspirators. This movement often finds its home at Kazi and Murray's Unit 2 performance space, where they open their doors to all who care about their cause. Luckily for CBC Music, we were invited into Unit 2 for a special performance of new material from Find Safety, and LAL packed the place with family and friends for the live premiere of this material.
