Archive of performers at French Quarter Festival STORYLINE:Singer Charmaine Neville, trumpeters Kermit Ruffins and Jeremy Davenport and more than a dozen jazz and brass bands are performing this weekend at the first music festival to be held by French Quarter Festivals, Inc., since the start of the coronavirus pandemic in 2019.This year will mark the 21st Satchmo Summerfest music festival honoring the life and music of Louis "Satchmo" Armstrong.The festival is scheduled to run Saturday and Sunday at the at the New Orleans Jazz Museum at the old U.S. Mint and the surrounding grounds in the French Quarter.Due to the pandemic attendees are being asked to purchase tickets in advance, as capacity will be limited at the outdoor stages, and there will be masking requirements indoors."There's going to be ample opportunity for folks to spread out," said Emily Madero, the president and CEO of French Quarter Festivals, Inc. "It's an outdoor event, and we know that's really important in terms of really reducing the potential transmission of COVID-19, and we're strongly recommending that folks wear masks at all times."Satchmo Summerfest is held annually around the Aug. 4 birthday of the man widely known as one of the founders of jazz. The first festival took place on what would have been his 100th birthday in 2001, the same year the New Orleans airport was renamed the Louis Armstrong International Airport.More than 20 acts are expected to perform this weekend, and as in years past, the festival will include food from local restaurants and educational talks with Satchmo scholars.Armstrong was raised in a poor section of New Orleans but went on to entertain millions, including heads of state and international royalty.French Quarter Festival is slated for October.
