Rioters Seize Control of Police Vehicle in Jakarta

Rioters stormed the streets of Jakarta, Indonesia, on May 23, in protest of President Joko Widodo’s May 21 election win against opposition candidate Prabowo Subianto. Widodo took 55.5 per cent of the vote, according to the Electoral Commission, with challenger Subianto on 44.5 per cent. Subianto disputed the result, alleging voter fraud. His supporters took to the streets of Jakarta in protests that began peacefully on May 21, but turned violent. Police used tear gas, rubber bullets and sticks to disperse crowds, while protesters threw rocks and set fire to structures, according to media reports. Jakarta Governor Anies Baswedan said six people were killed. However, a spokesperson for the police, quoted in the Jakarata Post on May 22, said this was not confirmed.
