Joy sign on wood STORYLINE:At the First Congregational Church in Colorado Springs, a gay men's choir is rehearsing for a holiday concert that's taken on a new meaning after a nearby LGBTQ nightclub became the site of a gruesome shooting that killed five and wounded 17.Since the Nov. 19 attack at Club Q, Colorado Springs' LGBTQ community has worked to collect itself and forge ahead. Patrons of the nightclub have organized donation drives for victims' families, leaned on "queer affirming" clergy and renewed their commitments to LGBTQ spaces and organizations, including the Out Loud Colorado Springs Men's Chorus."People are clamoring for tickets. We have a huge number of people that have signed up to audition for us in the spring," Frank Hall, council president of the chorus. "It's really been a very humbling and heartwarming experience to know that so many people want to get back together and want to have that community, and hopefully be part of change."Gay and lesbian choruses like Out Loud came about after the assassination of San Francisco Supervisor Harvey Milk and have remained prominent and visible institutions through the civil rights struggles of the 20th Century up to today, where they've taken an active role in the healing process after mass shootings like that at Orlando's Pulse Nightclub. In Colorado Springs, members of Out Loud are now preparing for a holiday season concert, having sold out three shows for the first time in 17 years. The concert's solemn notes are punctuations in a largely joyful event where Christmas carol medleys are camped up and the three kings wear feathery, neon scarves. Will Bishop, a member of the Out Loud chorus, says the first rehearsal after the shooting was "really difficult," but the group found solace in being together.Group members say they are sending a clear message that the LGBTQ community is still here, and there are still safe places to gather.----AP Video shot by: Thomas Peipert===========================================================Clients are reminded: (i) to check the terms of their licence agreements for use of content outside news programming and that further advice and assistance can be obtained from the AP Archive on: Tel +44 (0) 20 7482 7482 Email: info@aparchive.com(ii) they should check with the applicable collecting society in their Territory regarding the clearance of any sound recording or performance included within the AP Television News service (iii) they have editorial responsibility for the use of all and any content included within the AP Television News service and for libel, privacy, compliance and third party rights applicable to their Territory.
